Carpentry Program Plans Open House May 20-21. The Career and Technical Education Center and its Carpentry program students present their third “Home for a Lifetime” concept home. It is the 24th to be built by the program.

Northtown Asst. Principal Bob Hiatt retires after 32 years with North Kansas City Schools. Hiatt reception is Sunday, May 22 from 2-4 p.m. in Field House.

May 09 — Three area students were among six winners statewide in the annual Project 21 Scholarship contest sponsored by the Missouri Riverboat Gaming Assn. Savana Ricker, senior at Oak Park, has won a $1,000 scholarship for a poster she submitted.

the Missouri Choral Directors Assn. state summer conference in Jefferson City July 20.
Emily Otis, Suzanne Stanley and Lacey Youmans join the Grade 9-10 Youth Honor Choir, and Ryan Foley sings in the Grade 8 Youth Honor Choir.
May 03 — Some of the best hands in the bus business are behind the wheel in North Kansas City Schools. This weekend, the district Rookie Transit teams took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the
Kansas City Region 2005 School Bus Safety Competition.
May 03 — Only a middle school student could appreciate the sheer exhilaration of actually kicking butts on
“Kick Butts Day”, the celebration of which comes a bit later this year in North Kansas City Schools.
May 02Students in Academically Gifted Education (SAGE) will celebrate their accomplishments in Spanish language skills with family and friends when they host a fiesta on Tuesday, May 10 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Northview Elementary gym.

May 02North Kansas City High School social studies teacher Laurel Maslowski is hosting a one-day
conference on the subject of genocide, Tuesday, May 3. The conference is designed to raise student awareness of the continuing global problem of genocide and the dangers of marginalizing groups of people.

April 29 — The Federated Teachers of Music and Fine Arts, Inc. of Greater Kansas City has named
Dr. Stephen Pelkey, Antioch Middle and Clardy Elementary schools, the recipient of their “Apple for the Teacher” award.
April 29 — The selection committee of the Winnetonka High School Alumni Hall of Fame is seeking candidates for its annual alumni recognition program. Deadline for nominations is June 1, 2005.

April 26 — Spring sports physicals are again being offered for elementary, middle and high school students by the North Kansas City Schools Sports Clinic, located at Northgate Middle School, 2117 N.E. 48th Street, Kansas City-64118. Physicals are offered by appointment only on May 2-3-4 from 3-6 p.m. Phone (816) 413-6068.
April 22 — The Oak Park High School FCCLA Culinary Arts team took first place in state competition earlier this month. Sophomores Samantha Fordyce, Dee Schultz, and Daniel Trusty received $6,000 in scholarships to attend the culinary schools of their choice.

North Kansas City High School is one of 6 Missouri schools selected to receive a $35,000 HP Technology for Teaching Grant that includes HP wireless equipment, cash, and professional development to improve student achievement.

April 14Carman Visnich, modern language teacher at Northgate, has earned a $300 grant for her school library. Visnich, who successfully completed the East Asia Institute for Teachers at the University of Kansas will use the money to purchase educational materials related to East Asian study.
April 12 — For the first time, students at North Kansas City High School nominated whom they thought were the school's best teachers. Nominated were Scott Anderson, Mitsi Gough, Susie Helwig, Ed Jackson, John Minnick and Andrea Taylor. The school's 1,750 students named Ed Jackson as Teacher of the Year.
April 12 — Top Honors Won by Oak Park Students in National Student Journalism Competition.
April 08 —The Staff Development Committee is planning their Star Celebration May 5 from 3-6:30 p.m. at the balloon center square, Metro North Mall. Many groups of staff development will be recognized in addition to the Outstanding Staff Development Program, the JoAnne Beebe Vision Award, the Rising Star Award and the naming of the Staff Developer of the Year.

April 06 — The National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) has selected Annie Harp, a senior at Oak Park High School, for their Journalism Honor Roll. The NSPArecognizes student journalists who have excelled as journalists and scholars, have served on a staff for more than one year and have a minimum GPA of 3.75.
April 06 — District Students Compete at MSHSAA State Vocal Music Contest for Large Ensembles April 2. Singers Earn Highest Rating in 8 of 10 Groups.

April 06 — With an inspection rating of 98.5 percent, the North Kansas City Schools Transportation Department has once again earned the
Excellent Fleet Award from the Missouri Highway Patrol following the annual state inspection of district school buses.

Winnetonka High School senior Audra Glotfelty has been selected for Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of Missouri’s top academic students in the graduating class of 2005.
April 05 — North Kansas City Schools passes $140 million bond and 39-cent levy by wide margin.

Missouri Scholars Academy has named four district students to attend this year's summer residential program to be held on the campus of the University of Missouri - Columbia from June 12 through July 2.
April 04 — District Students Bring Home Eight “I Ratings” from
Missouri State Music Festival Mar. 31-Apr. 1 for large instrumental ensembles.
April 04 — K-5 elementary students at Fox Hill Elementary School in the Northland exercised their right to vote today, Monday, April 4, during recess. Each lap that students make walking around the playground gives them one more opportunity to vote for their favorite school subject. Students logged 738 miles. Favorite subject? Math, followed by Science.
April 02 — Elementary strings and North Kansas City High School orchestra teacher Rebecca Dixon is one of two selected by William Jewell College as a 2005 outstanding teacher honoree to represent the college at the Missouri Association of Colleges of Teacher Education conference this spring. The other Jewell nominee, also a district teacher, is Emily Evans, 2nd grade teacher at West Englewood.

It’s Never Too Late to Be Queen & King of the Dance. High Schools Host Senior Citizens Tea Dance Sunday, April 3 at Oak Park High School.
April 01 — As a student athlete, North Kansas City High School’s Jasmine Gibson has been nominated for the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association 2005 Miss Show-Me Basketball. She was also chosen All-Conference, All-State first team, All-Metro Sports first team, and Greater Kansas City Basketball Coaches Association All-Star 2005. She scored more than 1,600 points and 1,000 rebounds during her high school career.

March 30 — Board Recognizes 13 for
Traditions of Excellence Honor Cadres for Teaching and Service.
March 29North Kansas City High School senior Chris Marolt has been selected to receive a special scholarship through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The scholarship being offered him is the ADT Security Services, Inc. Scholarship.
March 29 — The Missouri Governor's Council on Disability has announced its 2005 Missouri Poster and Journalism contest winners. In the Journalism Contest, Lee Morehouse, a Winnetonka High School senior, has won 1st place for his essay. Jessica Shell, also a senior from Winnetonka High School received honorable mention in the same contest.
March 18 — The North Kansas City School District Education Foundation has awarded seven Dan Kahler Innovative Teaching Grants for the 2005-2006 school year. To date the Education Foundation has awarded 90 grants for more than $79,000.

in State Science Olympiad April 25 at MU.
March 17 Addison Hawkins is Mr. NKC 2005. Hawkins competed against a half dozen other talented North Kansas City High School students March 17 for the coveted honor. He represented the Northtown TV club.
March 17 — Eleven New Mark Middle School 8th Graders Head to State for History Day Competition in Columbia April 16.

Celebrates 25th Year of Eating of the Green March 16. Eileen Goetz, a resource special education teacher at Chouteau Elementary School, has celebrated Eating of the Green with her students for a quarter century, setting aside a day each year, close to St. Patrick’s Day, where her students could invite friends and family to a lunch – a green lunch.
March 15 —Students from North Kansas City, Oak Park and Winnetonka high schools will hold their 10th Annual Senior Citizens Tea Dance on Sunday, April 3 from 2-4 p.m. at Oak Park High School.

Bands Debut New Uniforms March 12 at Snake Saturday Parade. Parade begins at 11 a.m.

Fox Hill Elementary Is One of Two Schools Named for Missouri Outstanding Staff Development Program. Winning Program, “Wild About Writing”, was designed by reading teacher Donna Gross.

Elise Sabaski as “Change Agent of the Year”. Sabaski is a 4th grade teacher at Linden West Elementary.
March 03 — North Kansas City Schools Hosts
Free Immunization Clinics March 31 - May 6. The Kansas City Missouri Health Dept. sponsors the clinics. No appointment is necessary.

North Kansas City Schools display their talent this month in the annual Youth Art Month exhibition held at First Bank of Missouri, 7001 N. Oak Traffic Way, Kansas City – 64118.

Northgate Eighth Grader Daniel Bateman Wins National Contest to Perform on Broadway in April. He is one of 50 grand prize winners invited to perform in a live Broadway performance. In addition, the Northgate Communication Arts department will receive a $1,000 grant.

February 15 — “The Odd Couple” Takes Center Stage as Winter Play for
North Kansas City High School. Before the Tony award winning The Odd Couple makes its revival review on Broadway this fall, Northtown Theatre Association of North Kansas City High School will produce both the male and female versions of Neil Simon’s classic hit.

Middle School Honors Band Plays with Kansas City Brass in Concert Feb. 12.

February 08Winnetonka Senior Megan Humphreys Is Blue Ribbon Finalist at Western Missouri Regional Scholastic Art Exhibition. Artwork of Humphreys Competes Nationally.
February 07 — Students from District High Schools Compete in Western Missouri Regional Scholastic Art Exhibition. North Kansas City High School and Winnetonka High School art students who competed in the Western Missouri Regional Scholastic Art Awards program will see their work in a special two-week juried exhibition held at the Carter Art Center Gallery, Penn Valley Community College campus, from Jan. 30 through Feb. 10.
February 02 — The Oak Park Academic Aces had a good showing at the Science Knowledge Bowl tournament at Rockhurst University. Oak Park A finished 3rd in the Emeagwali Division and Oak Park B finished in 4th place in the Cori Division.

January 31 — Kindness Begins on the First Step of a School Bus. North Kansas City Schools 1st in Missouri to Use
KC3™ Positive Label Program. Shirley Patrick knows something about distractions. Patrick, who has been the assistant director of transportation for nearly seven years in North Kansas City Schools, began driving a school bus 30 years ago.
